Tombstones

Some of the tombstones at Smyrna Agora date back to when part of it was a cemetery, while others were transplanted there from other parts of the city. Nevertheless, the vast majority hail from the 18th and 19th Centuries.

Agora became a Christian cemetery in 10th Century, and then a Turkish-Muslim one in the 16th Century. This nearly millennium-long period came to an end shortly after the Modern Turkey was founded.  The 19th Century portion (to the north east; today a parking lot) was dubbed Mezarlıkbaşı (Lit: main cemetery).
